Petroforms at Whiteshell

Best in Show, 2004 Clarington Annual Juried Show of Fine Arts

Whiteshell Provincial Park
is located in Manitoba, right on the border with Ontario. Within its confines can be found petroforms, rock formations laid out on bare patches of the Canadian Shield. Some go back centuries, others are relatively recent, but taken together they are a profoundly affecting thing to see.

I was going for a kind of "spiritual landscape". The three ravens seemed necessary, not just for symbolic reasons, but also because it gave the image a sense of cross movement and a hint of sound. I also liked the receding middle, as if its leading to some unknowable place away from here.
